Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 6, 2018 at 1:30 PM at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for Woodrow Theodore Parker, age 99, who passed away on June 29, 2018. Pastor Artis Allen of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church will officiate, with repast to follow at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, located at 700 East Summit Road in Roswell, NM. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, 900 South Main Street, Roswell, NM.
Woodrow Theodore ("Woody") Parker was born to Pete and Adeline ("Lena") Parker in Binger, Oklahoma on December 7, 1918. He was the seventh child of 11 sisters and brothers. Woodrow was preceded in death by sons Woodrow Parker, Jr. and Richard Parker; daughter Wanda Jean Thomas; father Peter; mother Adeline; brothers John, Pete, Cecil, James Sporty, Bernett ("BJ"); and sisters Bernice, Julie, Jessie, Cutie and Callie.
Woodrow was an active member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Roswell, NM. He was baptized in 1945 by Dr. O. F. Dixon. He was ordained as a Deacon on March 18, 1979 by Rev. J. R. Shiner. He served as chairman of the Deacon Board, Superintendent of Sunday School, and Layman President of the National Baptist Laymen. He also served as the Devotional Leader of the Mt. Olive State Convention. He worked faithfully in all of his religious endeavors.
Woodrow loved to travel and fish. He worked in and eventually owned a business in the service station industry of Roswell for 30 years. He retired from the New Mexico State Hospital of Roswell.
Woodrow married Clittice Veora Green on April 4, 1977, who preceded him in death on November 24, 2013. They had no children. Together, they took care of great granddaughter Desiree Williams for several years. He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters and two sons: Esther Ruth Kennedy of Roswell, NM; Margaret Hills of Albuquerque, NM; Silvia Gail Hilliard of Roswell, NM; Glen Parker of Sayre, Oklahoma; and Joseph L. Parker and wife Ashley of Los Angeles, CA, as well as a host of many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, loving relatives and friends.
