COATES, THOMAS M.A Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 P.M. Thursday, August 17, 2006 followed by a Resurrection Mass at 5:30 P.M. to be held at St. Johns Catholic Church. Father Juan will be officiating the Mass. A Celebration of Toms life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, at the home of Ken and Sue Letcher; west highway 70, at Mile marker 326, turn south on Silo Rd. and go to the two story house at top of the hill. Interment will be at 3:00 P.M., Friday, August 18, 2006 at Fort Stanton Cemetery. All are welcome to these honoring of Toms life.

Tom Coates, age 81, of Roswell, passed away August 13, 2006 at his Roswell residence. Tom was born April 15, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio, to Irvin Noble and Berthed Daudlin-Coates who have preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters: Marisa J. Coates of Roswell and Terese M. Ibershoff of Lexington, Kentucky; his sister Leona Ree Stark of Lexington; his nephew: Frank Abraham also of Lexington: his sister and brother-in-law: Jeanie and Robert Jenkins of Roswell; his great nephew: Frank Abraham, JR ; great nieces: Christina Abraham and Valerie Abraham; his great-great nephew: Riley and great-great nieces, Elizabeth, and his dear friend, Margie Bennett of Carlsbad. He will be missed by many loving friends, including his parrot companion, Chico.

Tom served his country with dedication in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II as a radioman in the B-24 Liberator in the China, Burma, India Theater. He was an instructor in the United States Navy Reserve during the Korean War. After 29 years of committed and meritorious service with the Federal Aviation Administration, Tom retired in 1983. Shortly thereafter, Tom and Marge Coates moved to Roswell where he actively made it his home. He enjoyed camping, birding, motorcycling, computers, travel and electronics, building his first ham radio at 13 years of age. He was an active member in the Pecos Valley Amateur Radio Club and the Carlsbad Amateur Radio club. Tom was a longtime member of St. Johns Catholic Church. Tom was known for his willingness to help a friend in need and would often go the extra mile. We will miss his sense of humor, his generosity of spirit and his never give up attitude.
