Susan H. Dickerson, 82, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend, was called to her eternal resting place on April 10, 2026.
She was born on January 17, 1944, in Queens, New York, to Glenn and Frieda Hess.
Susan is survived by her son, Mark Dickerson and his husband, Anthony Stankelis; her daughter, Tiffany Stark and her husband, Scott; her grandchildren, Aleasha Stramel, Samantha Stramel, Brittney Stramel, Gregory Stramel, and Ethan Bonesteel; and her great-grandchildren, Isabelle Stramel, Felix Jr. Stramel, Jaxon Butler, and Susan Gencer, born April 14, 2026. She is also survived by dear friends Marie Anderson, Bill and Susan Hightower, and many others whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Susan spent much of her life caring for and raising animals, especially horses, but also goats, chickens, and pigeons. She found joy in the companionship of her dogs and cats. She loved gardening and shaping the landscape around her, had a deep appreciation for ecology, and enjoyed country music—she was especially moved by the music of John Denver. She also expressed herself through drawing and painting.
A strong, intelligent, and fiercely independent woman, Susan made a bold decision to leave Connecticut and build a life in New Mexico. There, in the wide open spaces she seemed destined for, she created a life she truly loved in a place that felt like home.
A small gathering of family and friends will be held to scatter her ashes in the New Mexico landscape she cherished and would never have wanted to leave.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Sunset Villa and the many doctors, nurses, and staff who provided compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
