Ruby Perkins

PERKINS, RUBY- A visitation will be held 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, January 12, 2018 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel for Ruby Perkins (Mema), 97 of Roswell, NM who passed away Friday, January 5, 2018. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at South Park Cemetery. Pastor Tim Aguilar of Church on the Move will officiate.

Ruby was born February 14, 1920 to Floyd Quincy and Sally Pearl Vest Wilbanks in Montalba, Texas, the eldest of six.
Ruby's mother passed away at the age of 29, leaving her at 11 years old to help raise her brothers and sisters, ages 9 and 2. Her dad was a farmer and all the children helped in the fields.

Ruby attended elementary and high school in Montalba, TX, after two years of college at San Marcos, TX, she spent five years working for the University of Texas in Austin, TX.

Life suddenly changed when Ruby fell in love and married an Air Force Officer, her dad told her, that soldier would drag her all over the world and he did.
After two years in Newfoundland, it was back to the states: San Bernardino, California for 4 years; Madrid, Spain for 3 years; Altus, Oklahoma for 4 years; Newberry, England for 1 year; back to Madrid, Spain for 2 years and then Retirement to Roswell, NM.

Ruby's bowling began in Palestine, TX and continued throughout their travels. While in Spain, Ruby was president of the association and made a never-to-be-forgotten trip to Munich, Germany to receive the WIBC Association Charter.

While in Roswell, Ruby served on the New Mexico Women's Bowling Association as State Director, Second Vice-President and as Treasurer. She was the first inductee into the Roswell Women's Hall of Fame and Inductee to New Mexico Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2001. Ruby bowled 28 Roswell City Tournaments, 26 State Tournaments, as well as 20 Women's National Tournaments. Her high game 263 and 665 high series. Ruby also spent many years assisting local youth bowling programs and serving as league secretary.

Ruby also worked for the Eastern NM State Fair for 25 years.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Floyd Quincy Wilbanks Sr. and Sonny Wilbanks; 3 sisters, Imogene Dean, Oleta Meyer and Polly Hoge; her husband, Ausie D. "Perk" Perkins; daughter, Teena Myers and her husband, Bobby Myers; and granddaughter, Lori Sparnon Sanders.

Ruby is survived by daughter, Diane Sparnon and her husband Charlie; grandchildren, Jason Fairfield and his wife, Traci; Summer Spurlock and her husband Mike; Doug Sparnon and his wife, Mary Ann; Chris Myers and Lorena Ramirez; and Ashley Myers Palma; also numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Sparnon, Lee Cooper, Jason Fairfield, Mike Spurlock, Doug Sparnon, Chris Myers, Jonathan Sparnon, and Rob Smyzenski.

The family would like to give special thanks to Ginny Michelevitz, Sheila Ortega and Staff at Heartfelt Manor. Words are not sufficient to express our gratitude.
In lieu of flowers, the family also request donations be made to Kindred Hospice, 400 N. Pennsylvania Suite 500, Roswell, NM 88201 in Ruby's name.
