Mildred Floyd

FLOYD, MILDRED “CHRISTINE”-  Mildred "Christine" Floyd, known as Chris to family and friends, age 86, peacefully passed away in her sleep on Sunday,  October 13, 2019. Our loving Mother, Grandmother, and G.G. was born on August 22, 1933 to Walter Floyd Fisher and Edna Goldston Fisher in Petersburg, Texas. Before she was a year old she moved with her parents and older sister Judy to Tahoka, Texas.

During the war her Daddy moved the young family to Roswell. This is where she met her lifelong friend Wanda Johnson Brown, at 8 years old. They have remained partners in crime and friends for 78 years.   Chris graduated from Roswell High School. She taught Sunday School at Washington Ave Baptist Church as a young adult. Her love of books and reading took her to the NMMI Library.

In July 1957, she married Dempsey Floyd, and she became the mother to his 2 year old son, Little Dempsey. She worked at Chaves County Abstract for Art Hammond until 1961 when their daughter Crystal was born. For a while they owned the East Second Tastee Freez. After her divorce she continued to raise her children alone. She began her newspaper career at the Roswell Daily Record downtown, working through the time of the fire, the remodel, and eventually moving to the existing office as Classified Ad Director.

In 1981, when her daughter married, she left the newspaper and Roswell to move to Raleigh, NC to live closer to her sister Judy and brother in law J.D. Fry. Chris went back to the newspaper business at the Wilson Daily Times in Wilson, NC.   In 1983 her first grandson was born and it took about a minute for her to return to Roswell.

Returning to her love of books, she took a position at the RISD Material Center. After her retirement she had more time to spend with her grandsons attending every sporting event possible. She was known to many at Lions Hondo Little League as "The Grandmother". In 2005 her life changed again becoming a Great Grandmother and was lovingly know as G.G. from then on. She continued to cheer on those great grandchildren over the last 14 years by yelling at every umpire and referee. She was the matriarch and strength of our family and was happiest when surrounded by all of us.

Chris was reunited with her parents Edna and Floyd Fisher, sister and brother in law Judy and J.D. Fry, her son Dempsey Floyd II, nephew Jay Fry, several Goldston cousins, the father of her children Dempsey Floyd, and her loving pets Missy and Maggie.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter Crystal Tubbs and her husband Stacey Tubbs, grandson Joshua Tubbs and his girls Cadence and Cailyn Tubbs, and their mother Jacque Tubbs, grandson Johnathan Tubbs and his wife Becca Tubbs and their children, Niko, Natalie, and Nathaniel Tubbs, all of Roswell. One nephew Keith Fry of Raleigh, NC.

The family would like to thank the Doctors at Covenant Medical for their years of support, the Roswell Fire Department, and Richland Auto Group.

Following her specific wishes, graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 17, 2019 South Park Cemetery with Pastor Troy Grant officiating. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make memorial contributions to the Roswell Humane Society or the Friends of the Roswell Public Library.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
