Mardine Cooper

December 22, 1935 — January 29, 2024

Mardine Hughes Cooper was born December 22, 1935 in Roswell, New Mexico, to Mr. And Mrs. Henry J. (Peggy Stevens) Hughes, both now deceased.  She was named after her two aunts, Nadine Hughes and Marcielle Stevens Payne of Artesia.  Mardine’s family homesteaded on a ranch north of Roswell and she attended school at the Frazier Old Rock School House.  She later attended elementary school in Roswell and in 1954, She graduated from Roswell High School.  She married Carl E. Cooper, July 2, 1954, in the Nazarene Church of Roswell, New Mexico and together they attended New Mexico State University. Mardine has been a long-time resident of the Roswell area for many years.  She became a member of the Roswell Country Club.  She enjoyed playing in women’s golf tournaments locally as well as throughout the southwest.  She was also a life master bridge player.  Mardine lived a life of service to her family, friends, and community.  Carl and Mardine were members of the First United Methodist Church of Roswell.

     She is survived by her husband Carl E. Cooper of Roswell, New Mexico; three sons, James Wendell Cooper (Brenda) of Glendale, Arizona, and Gordon Brian Cooper (Paula) and Martin Bradley Cooper (Rhonda) both of Roswell, New Mexico; Mardine has one surviving sister, Jennie Lou Hughes Mays, formally of Roswell ,NM, now of Shawnee OK;  She has 11 grandchildren: Bradley (deceased), Jeffrey, Lynse, Jeremy, Katrina, Kendra (deceased), Kayla, Kelsey, Justin, Brandon and Trevor.  She has 21 great-grandchildren: Chauncey, Lyla, Ben, Mallory, Annette (Jeffrey) Ethan, Wyatt, Olivia, Savannah (Bradley) James Henry, Thomas, William (Lynse) Oliver, Madeline (Kelsey) Jackson, Cooper (Katrina) Shaedyn, Jordyn (Kayla) Caroline, Karley (Justin) Casey (Brandon).   

    She was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Cooper on August 26, 2023, a granddaughter, Kendra Cooper on June 1, 1988, and her son, Carl Edwin Cooper Jr. (Eddie) on July 29, 1995.  Also preceding her in death were her two brother’s James Hughes (2014 of Roswell, New Mexico), Richard Hughes (2020 of Capitan, New Mexico) and one sister Peggy Ann Paradee (2023 of Amarillo, Texas). 

    She was known and cherished as Pama, Mama, Aunt Mardine, Mom, Sug (by her siblings).  She lived a life of service, kindness, grace, and beauty.  She would rather give than receive.  She filled our lives with light and our hearts with love.  She will be dearly missed but will live on in our hearts for generations.

   There will be a viewing Monday evening February 5, 2024 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel from 5:00- 7:00 PM.   Funeral Services will be held for Mardine Hughes Cooper on Tuesday February 6th, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Roswell located at 200 N. Pennsylvania, Roswell, NM 88201 with Reverend Tina Cross. Interment will be in South Park Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico following the service.  

    Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Cooper, Jeremy Cooper, Justin Cooper, Brandon Cooper, Trevor Cooper, Nick Castle, Matt Ellis and Michael Ashcroft. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steve Hughes, Craig Paradee, Richard Mays, Robert Mays and Greg Cooper.
