Roswell

Lucy Elizabeth Wilbur was born in Holyoke, MA on September 25, 1924, the daughter of Perry Frederick Zwisler and Elizabeth Sterling (Spear) Zwisler. Lucy passed quietly at home on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Her husband of 70 years, Alfred, passed away in February 2017. She is survived by her brother, John Zwisler of Massachusetts. Lucy was preceded in death by her sister Jean (Zwisler) Wilson. Lucy and Alfred have five children Susan, Carol, Bruce, John and Laurie; twelve grandchildren, twenty-six greatgrandchildren; and, two great-great grandchildren.

Alfred and Lucy were married on August 8, 1946. They lived and raised their children in Auburn, MA, from 1952 until 1990, when they made the permanent move to Roswell, NM. and became members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Lucy attended Massachusetts State College, Amherst, MA (now U-Mass), graduating in June 1946 with her bachelor's degree in Home Economics and a minor in Childhood Education. She was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi (a "Pi Phi" girl).

Lucy raised the family at the home in Auburn, was an active member in all the events and committees at The First Baptist Church of North Oxford and helped establish the Jack and Jill Pre-school at the church. She then helped establish the first publicly mandated kindergartens for the town of Oxford, MA; continued her education and spent 10 years as a Kindergarten Administrator and Teacher, Clara Barton Elementary, N. Oxford, MA.

Lucy was always a leader and in her 97 years participated in: Rainbow Girls; Brownie Scouts; President of Central Association American Baptist Women of MA; Camp Counselor and lifelong supporter of Grotonwood Baptist Camp Ministries; Teaching Assistant with The American Baptist Churches of MA; ENMMC Auxiliary, Thrift Store and Senior Circle (Roswell) — more than 6,000 hours; Volunteer at Historical Society of S.E.N.M; Blood Donor (in excess of 1,000 pints); Choir and Soloist at First Baptist Church, N. Oxford; Trinity Methodist Church Choir, Day School Board and U.M.W.; and Walker AFB Organization Secretary.

Lucy loved to read, travel, send greeting cards, be around all the children and bake holiday cookies for everyone, including all her neighbors! She loved God and shared her Faith! Her kindness and sense of humor will be missed!

The family wishes to thank all the girls at Comfort Keepers, especially our Kaylea, for their kindness and caring of our Mother Lucy these past few years.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity in Lucy's name. Or Lucy would be pleased to know that you just took the time to brighten someone's day with a card or a hug and a big smile.

A Memorial Service for Lucy will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 18, 2022 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Lucy and Alfred will be interred to rest at Southwest Cemetery, Oakham, Massachusetts at a later date.
