STONE, LLOYD EDWARD- Lloyd Edward Stone, 95, died February 9, 2018. He resided in the Dexter/Roswell community excluding the time attending Hardin-Simmons University and serving in the Army Air Corp, European Theatre during World War II.

Lloyd, born to Arthur Clarence and Annie May Stone on the 19th of June, 1922, is survived by his wife Jerry Nelle Stone of Roswell, step-son Ray Seale (Jeannette), of Cyprus, California; son, Bill (Ruth) of Monument, Colorado; two grandchildren: Shawn Stone, (Helenka) of Denver, Colorado; Stephanie Anderson (Seth) of Larkspur, Colorado; and five great-grandchildren. Lloyd is predeceased by his first wife, Toby, of 59 years; his son, Harley; his parents, four brothers and four sisters. Lloyd is survived by his youngest brother Fred Stone of Roswell.

After returning from WWII, Lloyd farmed over forty years in Greenfield, New Mexico until his retirement to Roswell in 1988. He was known among family and friends for his generosity especially to those in need.

Lloyd's parents traveled by covered wagon and train from Tennessee via the Oklahoma Territory and settled in the Pecos Valley in 1907 as farmers. This pioneering mindset helped shape Lloyd into an innovative leader with a 'can do' attitude as evidenced through his school days at Dexter High in academics and athletics, as a World War II B-24 Liberator Bomber pilot, and as a member of Dexter High School Board (1963-75), Dexter/Hagerman Soil Conservation Board (NRCD, 1948-51), and Dexter-Hagerman Co-op Gin Board. Lloyd successfully promoted the concept and implementation of Greenfield water to Hagerman from his Greenfield farm. Lloyd was recognized as a contributor to the Distributive Education Clubs of America in Dexter/Hagerman through guidance, inspiration and support to the program of youth activity. He served his Lord through service in the First Baptist Churches of Dexter (deacon and teacher), Hagerman, and Roswell.

Lloyd joined the aviation cadet program in 1942. As a bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force, he flew twenty-six B-24 missions over Germany. Lloyd and his crew of eight were among the twenty-nine per cent of bomber crews that came home. The memories of the atrocities of war lingered with Lloyd the remainder of his life. The stories of his courage and sacrifice to this nation reside in the archives of the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress. This past week, he completed his final mission (Ephesians 2:10).

A visitation will be 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, February 16, 2018 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Funeral service 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the LaGrone Funeral Chapel, followed by a graveside ceremony at South Park and a reception at the First Baptist Church. Officiating Pastor Aaron Colyer.
