John Southern, age 84, beloved Father, was called to his eternal resting place on November 27, 2020, to rejoin his wife of 46 years, Vida Southern.
He entered this world on January 12, 1936, in Vaughn, NM, born to Charles and Effie Southern. He is survived by his son, Doug Southern, daughter-in-law Karen Southern, and granddaughter BrookeLynne Southern.
John served in the New Mexico National Guard reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was a dedicated teacher working as a professor at Adam’s State College. He was an active member of Central Church of the Nazarene serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Vida Southern. He was also preceded in death by three siblings: Charles H. Southern, Vera Gastineau, and Rosa Southern. He is survived by his sisters Elizabeth Hicks, Celia Sisson, and Edith Hellman. John loved his family, including numerous nephews, nieces, and many children from church and the community that he and Vida babysat and cherished. He loved working outside and caring for his cows and did so for as long as he could.
Viewing for John will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, Friday, December 11, 2020 at La Grone Funeral Chapel. As he would not want to endanger anyone in attendance at his funeral, a memorial service will be held at a later time.
