May 10, 1930 — May 16, 2024

Hubert Loyd “Bill” Huff

Hubert Loyd “Bill” Huff a resident of Roswell, NM for 63 years passed into the arms of Jesus on May 16, 2024.

He was born on May 10,1930 on a farm near Eufaula, Oklahoma the eighth child of a family of 7 boys and 2 girls.   Hubert (Bill) married his high school sweetheart, Lavaughn Turner Huff in 1953.   They would have celebrated their 71st wedding in December.

Bill was the first of his 8 siblings to graduate from high school along with his younger brother Eugene Huff who graduated 2 years later.  Bill’s other siblings were unable to finish high school because the farm required their help.

Bill joined the Air Force and spent 4 years serving as an auto mechanic during the Korean War.   With Lavaughn’s encouragement and support, Bill attended East Central State University and graduated in 1960 with an Undergraduate degree and with a Master's degree in 1964.  He taught school in Kansas then later moved to Roswell in 1964 where he taught Math, Shop and served as an Assistant Principal for the Roswell Independent School District   Bill retired from teaching in 1985.  He spent his retirement doing what he loved, designing, building and remodeling houses, camping, hunting, fishing and traveling.  During his travels he researched his family genealogy and even wrote a book Huff Tales and Trails.

Bill played 42 for many years and even won several trophies.   He also loved to play Dominoes.  He spent many hours at the Roswell Adult Recreation Center playing Dominoes and later the “boys” as he referred to them, came to his home to play.   He continued to play (and win) until 2 weeks before his death.  He was just a “whiz” with numbers.  When the grandkids came home it was the family joke to “beat Grandpa” at Hand and Foot a game the family loved to play.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Lavaughn Turner Huff, his parents Robert and Mary Sarah Huff, his brothers and sisters, and grandsons, Jesse Don Ferguson and Jon Marc Huff.

Bill is survived by his two children, Rhetta Huff Ferguson and Hugh Jon “Buddy” Huff.  His granddaughter, Rachel Ferguson, and granddaughter-in-law, Tina Ferguson, his three great-grandchildren, SeCiliah Ferguson, Trinity Feguson and Connor Ferguson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Enhabit Home Health and Enhabit Home Hospice for their care, especially his nurse, Yvonne Henrikson and his many caregivers, “Nina” Morales, Michelle Gallardo, Eli Baeza, Sylvia Menes, Micki Lewis, Tim East and all the others who helped with his care.  It takes a team.

Graveside services will be held at the General Douglas L. McBride Veterans Cemetary in Roswell, NM on May 28th at 11:00 am.  Arrangements are under the personal care of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.  Online condolences may be made at www.lagronefuneralchapel.com.
