Henry Jewell

October 27, 1933 — January 1, 2019

JEWELL, JR., HENRY TILLMAN- Henry Tillman Jewell, Jr. age 86 of Roswell passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Roswell, NM with family by his side.

Celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 PM, Friday, January 11, 2019 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel. Elder Calvin H. Bell, Sr. will be officiating.

Henry T Jewell "Hank" Jr. was born to Kathryn and Henry T Jewell Sr. on October 27, 1933. He was an only child. His father served many years in the Coast Guard, so he grew up traveling, exploring and experiencing different cultures of the world. He was also very athletic growing up; he was a lean mean body building machine in his twenties (Inside Joke). He loved the water and tennis. He took pride in his physical appearance. He was almost always seen with a polo-shirt and a sports jacket on.

Henry attended colleges in Michigan and Missouri getting his Master's degree in Sociology. While attending college, he wrote a book called "The Attitude Toward Left Handedness By University Faculty Members." It was so effective, the superintendent from Missouri State highway patrol responded to his research with an official letter in March of 1976.

After Henry retired as a college instructor in sociology in Virginia, he wanted to relocate. During his search, he stopped in Roswell, NM. He fell in love with the friendly, slow paced, peaceful town of Roswell and decided to stay. He married Betty Biggers on August 24, 1992. It was an immediate connection with the family and became affectionately known as brother Hank, Daddy Hank or Grampa Hank. Henry lived a simple life. He was very outgoing and loved to socialize. He never met a stranger and was an avid animal lover (dog's name was Jerome). He loved taking family and friends to lunch. He always looked forward to events when all the family got together.

He attended Immanuel COGIC where he often taught Sunday school. He was a bible scholar and loved to read. Henry enjoyed walking everywhere whether it was walking through the neighborhood waving at the neighbors or walking through town stopping in stores. Henry was a movie buff; he loved movies starting from the silent film era to the 1940's. He had a passion for research in everything and anything that caught his attention. He fell in love with real estate and started working toward getting licensed. He was thrilled and proud when he was able to find a home for someone. After his wife passed away, he chose to continue to stay close to the family he married into.

He is preceded in death by his parents Kathryn and Henry T. Jewell, Sr.; Wife Betty Biggers Jewell; Brothers-in-Law; Bobby Gates Hall and Donnell Hunter.

Left to cherish his memory: Mother-in-law, Jewelene Hunter; Sisters-in-law; Gloria Cannon and husband John, Maurine Hunter; Brothers-in-law; Charles Hall, Junior Hunter, Eldridge Hunter Wayne Hunter, Rudolph Hunter and wife Sharon, Adolph hunter and wife Sheila; Step-sons; Chris Hall and wife Ranae and Mercedes Sosa; Step-daughter, Kimberly Sosa; Grand-children, Rebecca, Chris, Bobby, Dominic, Amber, Michael and Kevin; Great-grandchildren, Kaydance, Braden, Peyton, Jazzlynne and Malyki.

The family would like to thank and ask special Blessings to friends for their prayers, presence, support, encouragement and help during our time of bereavement. A sincere thank you to the staff of Mission Arch Care Center, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center and Kindred Hospice for going above and beyond your responsibilities in caring and watching over our beloved Hank.
