Elsie Hughs

Elsie May Hughs, 91, of Roswell, NM, passed from this life into her new life in heaven on December 15,2020. She was able to remain at home during the struggles of old age due to the loving care of David, her son.

Elsie was born on February 23, 1929, in Washington, Kansas, to John and Ruby (Boston) Applegarth. She and her 13 siblings were raised in Kansas, and the family always had plenty of stories to tell about their childhood.

On June 1, 1952, Elsie married John Karl Hughs in Manhattan, Kansas. They celebrated 60 years of marriage before he died in 2012. John and Elsie made their home and raised their four children in Plainview, Texas, where John worked for Southwestern Public Service. In 1981, John and Elsie moved to Roswell, New Mexico, and John continued to work for Southwestern Public Service until his retirement. Elsie was faithful to her Lord and Saviour throughout her lifetime and believed her place in life was to be a homemaker for her husband and children. She also had a great love for all children and taught toddler-aged children in Sunday School until she could no longer do so because of her age. She was very gifted in telling Bible stories and teaching memory verses, and she the importance of teaching children from a very early age. Elsie was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Roswell.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby Applegarth; her husband, John Karl Hughs; five brothers, Ray, Bill, Earnest, Walter, and Elmer Applegarth; and three sisters, Grace Haak, Mildred Fogle, and Edith Love.

She is survived by her four children, Ruth (Paul) Stein of Granbury, TX, Carol (Mac) Hamel of Plainview, TX, David Hughs of Roswe11, NM, and Richard (Jennifer) Hughs of Buffalo, NY; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy (Don) Kerschner, Arva (Herb) Wenger, Della (Steve) Goldsberry, and Wilma (Bob) Thompson; and one brother, Fred (Marilyn) Applegarth.

No funeral service is scheduled, but her family and friends will remember Elsie as a true servant of Jesus Christ who exemplified the traits described in I Peter 3, including a "meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price." Burial will be in South Park Cemetery under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
