VOORHEES, DANIEL B. -- Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 15, 2006, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, for Daniel B. Voorhees, age 84, of Roswell, who died July 7, 2006 at a local nursing home. Rev. Tracy Spencer-Brown of Westminster Presbyterian Church will conduct the service.

Daniel was born May 23, 1922 in Raton, New Mexico, to Fred Joseph and Grace Baldwin Voorhees, who have preceded him in death.

He married Patricia Detweiler on August 5, 1947 in Albuquerque. She survives him at the family home.

He is also survived by a son, Dr. Fred J. Voorhees and his wife Beth of Austin, Texas, and three grandchildren; Mary Voorhees, Daniel Voorhees and Patricia Voorhees all of Austin.

Daniel attended Colorado University on a football scholarship. In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Randolph Field and served as an army P.E. Instructor and played football on the Randolph Field Ramblers, which played in the 1943 Cotton Bowl against Texas University. He later graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Masters Degree in Education. He taught in Raton, Albuquerque and Roswell where he was also a guidance counselor at the New Mexico Military Institute. He retired as a diagnostician from the New Mexico Rehabilitation Center in Roswell in 1985.

When not at work, he was a steward for and cherished playmate of the neighborhood boys, taking them hiking, swimming, fishing, ice skating and sledding. He enjoyed athletic competition, most notably golf, running and biking, and he participated in the Senior Olympics every year until he became ill. He organized the Roswell Runners Club and was its first President. He had an avid interest in politics and was proud to be a Democrat. He was also active in the Presbyterian Church, in which he was an Elder.

Friends may make memorials to the Alzheimers Association, Vista Care Hospice Foundation or Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
