Avon Wilson

WILSON, AVON -- Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Friday, July 14, 2006, at First United Methodist Church for Avon Wilson, age 76, of Roswell, who passed away July 10, 2006 at her home. Rev. Archie Echols of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service assisted by Rev. Fred McDonald. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.

Avon was born September 24, 1929 in Wichita Falls, Texas to WR Bill and Ethel Hargrave Wilcke, who have preceded her in death.

She married Bill Wilson on June 2, 1961 in Roswell. She met Bill, her one and only, at a Halloween party at Rulons. After a five year courtship, they were married over 45 years ago. He survives her at the family home.

Other survivors include a sister, Roma Wilcke, of Roswell; brother-in-law Jerry Wilson and wife, Lois, of Roswell; Joan Hargrave , a cousin from Carlsbad; Sherry Reyes a cousin and her husband Larry from Tijeres; Dona and Sam Mays a cousin; and Jan Wilson, a cousin. Also surviving is a special friend, Norma Jean Scott of San Angelo, Texas, and numerous other cousins and friends.

Avon graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High School in 1946. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Education from North Texas State College in 1949 and a Master of Education Administration from Eastern New Mexico University in 1995.

Avon worked as a public school teacher for 25 years. She came out of retirement to work with the ENMU-Roswell Adult Basic education Program in 1986.When she began working in the ABE program, fewer than 300 students were enrolled in all of the combined areas. Under Avons competent, visionary, and caring leadership, the ABE program today served more than 2500 students. When asked about her career, Avon said: As an elementary school teacher, what made my day, even my year, was to see childrens faces light up to show when they finally understood something. When I started working in Adult Basic Education and saw that same look on an adults face, it just went right through my heart.
PUpon Avons retirement as the Director of Adult Basic Education at ENMU-Roswell in 2005, the ENMU Board of Regents granted her Emeritus Director status in recognition of her 19 years of outstanding service to the Roswell Campus. Her excellence in the field of Adult Basic Education earned her honor and distinction in the state of New Mexico and nationally. She received virtually every award given on the Roswell campus, including the NISOD Award for Teaching Excellenc
